No idea, I'm just repeating what I've heard from SuSE employees.
Another opinion was that there's no need to supply too many multimedia
players and xine was a better choice because it's more mature and is
easier too use. Don't ask me which features they compile into xine,
though to make it legally less problematic.

All in all probably the same reasons why xine is in Debian while mplayer
is not.
