That is for consistency with ffmpeg (no LIBDIR there). Ffmpeg uses
lowercase names for installation directories and I added libdir there
first. That value must be provided by config.mak when the libavcodec
and libavformat subdirectories are copied to mplayer. I did not want to 
end up having libdir in libavcodec/Makefile (and other Makefiles from 
ffmpeg) and LIBDIR in libdha/Makefile and decided to use libdir there as 
well. Should we use uppercase names everywhere ?
