Are you sure? I looks like e.g. af_volume can do the calculations using 
floating point arithmetic, and if it does it should be a problem to find 
an architecture where it is slower that MP3-decoding...

Ok, I did some small modifications, like removing intendation changes, 
changing the messages a bit and not restricting it to af_volume (by 
sending the message down the filter line before trying to insert it).
