I have been following some of this thread, but I think I missed something.

How did mplayer find out in the first place that someone was abusing them?

I think it is an interesting topic:
If software is only released in binary form and the EULA refuses to let 
that end user reverse engineer the code. How can any company find out if 
another company has stoled their code or not?
