I was referring to any conversion process that would make some frames
interlaced (because they're a combination of fields from two adjacent
frames) and leave some frames intact.

Deinterlacing telecined video looks pretty bad, whereas properly inverse
telecining results in the original source.

I don't know if you're in NTSC land or PAL country, but I've seen
several NTSC TV shows around here that are telecined. I can't assume
that made-for-tv material will always be filmed at 60 fields per second.

I don't have a TV card, and I've never encounterd interlaced video from
DVDs for which pp=lb gives quality I wouldn't accept.
