Personally, I'd prefer to have all hyphens escaped in this fashion,
because I've managed to screw up my man page displaying such that any
pair of characters '-?' are replaced by at minimum approximately four
characters with an obscured version of the original two in the middle
unless the hyphen is escaped. (I was trying to get locale and charset
switched to use UTF-8, but didn't succeed, and am now in a halfway state
but not sure how to get back.)

This should not necessarily dictate anything - I'm just a single user,
and the problem is largely the result of my own stupidity. But it's none
the less true for all that....
