I really liked the suggestion:
-vf expand=aspect=4/3

If you experience problems with "/", then is there a way to make expand 
take something like: -vf expand=aspect=4:3
I agree it requires more caracters to type, but at least you don't have 
to count the ':' with your finger on the screen to make sure you typed 
the right number of them.

That's just a suggestion though.
