[MPlayer-dev-eng] What is API4 in xvid and does mplayer use it?

Hi,
    I was going through XviD forums on doom9 site and somebody over there mentioned about api4 being faster for encoding. Does mencoder use api4 for encoding? And also can somebody point to a link about api4?
