Well, for example I just have an amount of patches I apply to mplayer,
I'm using them (about half of them, to be exact; I just like other half
;), but they aren't particularly useful for me). I update them myself if
they won't compile under newer mplayer and I'm happy. I feel sad that
nobody else, including their authors cares about them, because that
means that nobody except me needs them and I'll have to fix them each
time they conflict with changes in mplayer, but what else I can do?

There are even more useful patches than this one, for example
ifo_read.diff, but if even they aren't getting applied, what's the point
in asking for applying patches with minor features or more or less
cosmetic fixes (like the ones from official mplayer's rpm)?
