It's a bug in Quartz that causes playback to be slower on OS X. It will 
always spend most of its CPU time in an extra (very badly written) 
conversion to YUV 422 and gamma correction to 1.8 inside QuickTime.

There's no very good way to fix it besides waiting for 10.4 and hoping 
it gets better; my local copy of mplayer has its own faster replacement 
for the dumb Quicktime function, but the patch is too ugly to submit, 
and I'm not sure if improvising with -vf eq2,yuy2 would do any better.
