i don't have that mail anymore...
hmmm..
with that patch (and this one) applied, is mplayer able to display the 
ssa subs aligned (approximately) correctly?

btw. please note that mplayer can use fontconfig stuff ( -fontconfig) in 
which case there are no ttf files ;)

means:
-yes this is a problem that we should solve (implement solution).
or
-yes, the problem is that they're doing softsubs. they should do 
hardsubs instead.
