maybe the best way would be using libavcodec for this.
afaik it already supports png, gif and jpeg writing.
also it must be much faster than libpng/libjpeg etc

(i wanted to do it this way, but i was in hurry and i
already had libpng-based image dump written for other project
so it was easier to copypaste it...)
