Considering that not even all people have the same version of word, which
is basically required if you want to use .doc as means of communication,
your number two seems strange... Hell, it's not even enough for all users
having same version of word, they must have the same programs installed
too! I've seen people copy/pasting stuff from one program into word to make
.doc for email or whatever, and that of course doesn't work when the receiver
has Word 2000 and Autocad R12 while the sender had Word 2002 and Autocad
R13 or something.

The only sane thing to do is to convert it to for example pdf or html. Then you
can inspect it yourself, and see for yourself what went missing from the original,
rather than having to guess that nothing will go missing when the recipient tries
to open the .doc...
