And it's great to have a term for a concept that I've thought about and
discussed with others many times over the years.

Notice the word "sane" above ;).  The problem with versioning schemes is
that several alternatives exist and none is clearly better than the
others.  As I said, a bikeshed topic.

But you put a finger on the problem when you started talking about
meaningless version numbers.  Our current versioning scheme does have a
meaning in people eyes, it's just not the meaning we intend it to have.
That's the main problem.

That's more or less what I have in mind.

I'll just bite the bullet and start a new thread about this.  We'll see
how this works out..
