The boxes contain redundant information, and thus it's not necessary to
read all of them. I haven't checked whether the current MPlayer behavior
is correct but what you say is not a reason to think the times would be
off by more than a few frames at most.

What kind of logic is that? How do you get from MPlayer not reading some
parts of the file to the belief that the file isn't invalid?
