The current GUI sucks. Because it sucks so badly most developers do not
use it (they must be able to use the command line, and if you can use
that there is not much point in using the bad GUI). Because they won't
use it anyway they're not interested in minor improvements.

I don't think anyone opposes the general idea of having a GUI. But the
current GUI codebase might not be worth keeping.

To get the GUI to a level that could be considered good would require a
major rewrite. Doing that with patches so that each change is posted as
an individually applicable patch would not be practical; it'd require
huge patches that basically replace Gui/ with something else. If you
want to just fix a few of the worst problems while leaving the GUI
basically as sucky as it is now most people probably won't care much.
If you want to write a proper GTK2 replacement for the current GUI then
I'd say you need to either write it locally and post one patch for
replacing the current GUI once it's ready or wait until you convince
people to give you SVN access because of other patches.
