With catgets it looks even easier. See, catgets uses last argument, the
untranslated string. Put catgets in mp_msg (and it's the only reasnable
place IMHO, not altering too much of sources, and not having many places
to make a mistake), and you can control in mp_msg if you want to also
use this last argument by itself. Like:

trans=catgets(...,orig);
printf(trans,...);
if (debug)
  printf(orig,...);
But if something even better can be invented, I'm in favor of it.
