btw: I recently wrote a patch for the
reencode2 plugin of freevo  (that was accepted,
it may be part of freevo > 1.7)

my patch uses -ss and -endpos when transcoding , to set start
and end times of teh segment to transcode

one of the feature requests of teh freevo people
would indeed have been to use a more precise method
than -ss : so they asked me (time permitting)
to try to use the EDL 

so any improvement in this respect is quite welcome
to me
