You still have devices with alsa. You can use them (and feel the
consequences). Same as using vidix - one incorrect step and nothing
works.
Alsa devices will always be there, no one can access kernel directly
without using devices. No one promised nice stable documented interface
though...
Well, unless someone develops completely out-of-kernel audio drivers.
This might work at least for usb soundcards, audio driver as a library
which accesses raw device directly, kernel doesn't even know about
audio.
