I have a i945 and while it works there it is unbelievably slow, I'd say
it must be implemented in software...

Right, though ASS subtitles are rendered in software and both are
rendered in movie resolution.
Also I'd think that the -vo gl:scaled-osd OSD should not be slower at
least (which is not worth much as long as vo_gl is so slow for you).
