A tighter integration would certainly benefit most GUIs, which currently
have to work around the limitations of working with MPlayer as an
application.

But it seems to me it would need a lot of work to implement. The idea of an
mplayer library has been brought up before and the point has been made that
such a change would require fundamental changes to MPlayer.

Currently, I think my time is better spent on MPlayer OSX where more
improvements can be made with less effort. Though if someone would decide to
work on this I would be certainly be willing to help.
