I understand your point of view. Anyway, having a third party that 
maintain this code is less effort for the Mplayer team...

Right now the only solution to keep video capture feature  in mplayer 
with current kernel is to link to libv4l, no alternative... (prelinking 
the libv4l compat lib does not work with mplayer...)

For the long term, this is the best solution, but the user base needs 
one now :)
