All codec development has moved to FFmpeg and also IMO MPlayer nowadays
handles anything most people need. It certainly handles any and all files
_I_ want to play, that even includes DVD menus for all DVDs I personally
own (even though that is one of the more buggy parts of MPlayer I think,
and it has some limitations that make it look ugly but IMO still usable).

While there are some other reasons, I do think this is simple a case that
there are not that many features missing. And quite a few features have been
added only recently like rmpt support and teletext for DVB.
Of course others are missing like DVB subtitles (relevance is reduced since
at least in e.g. Germany it is not really used), BluRay (relevance limited
since there will be no reliable BluRay playback in the near future, except
_maybe_ by using a special, Windows-only decryption program, and nobody is
much interested in Windows development, whether for MPlayer, VLC or ...)
