IMO it's too early to drop support for older driver versions. Few people
have the latest release installed yet, and it may not even be available
in various distro packaging systems. This is not such an important
feature that it'd justify dropping support for older versions a week
after the new one is released.

Your patch does not update the configure tests either, so VDPAU support
would be enabled even with older drivers but compilation would fail.

What do you mean by this? Where does VDPAU documentation say anything
about frame rate limits?
