Thanks for your answer.

My test machine is a low-end one, only 75 BogoMIPS reported by linux on 
startup. However, it works perfectly for me as an IP (yet not quite 
video)phone under asterisk softpbx control with help of lircexec.

After my initial tries with Qt Embedded, that I expected less demanding than 
X, I ended up using mplayer OSD over fbdev as my experimental lightweight 
GUI :).
