For now, if you are behind a firewall without the new option, it just hang
forever waiting for a UDP packets that are block by the firewall.
It would be nice to have LIVE returns an error code and have mplayer
shutdown properly.
This way we can make mplayer do the retry with the TCP flag if a timeout
occurs.

Yes, I agree with you. But I just want to make it easy to user "joe" to play
any kind of URL. User "joe" doesn't even know about firewall, he just wants
to give the URL and receive the stream.
That the way RealPlayer, WMPlayer and other do. That's just automatic
protocol fallback, the most optimal first to the least optimal.
