Was there ever some sort or progress or decision about this?

I stumbled across this again because I was looking into an old bug
report on Bugzilla about the -flto gcc flag:

mp3lib fails to compile with that flag, gcc runs out of registers.
I did not investigate in much detail nor try other gcc version apart
from the 4.5 variant I happened to have installed.

Note that vf_fspp causes linking errors with -flto, mp3lib is not
the only problem.
