Fine, it's not the perfect solution but the perfect solution probably
involves some significant code cleanup.
Also since it looks like also some differences in behaviour remain
between w32_common and x11_common behaviour (I'll ignore the OSX code,
before I feel the urge to go berserk ;-) ).
