I went for downscaling because with fonts, it's at the very small sizes that
you can really see the difference between good and bad settings: they can
make the difference between unreadable and readable.
I tried upscaling (from PAL to 1680×1050 and 1280×720), and I could barely
see the difference (apart some strange dots near the corners for the SPU
scaler; possibly a small bug).

I can see what you are talking about at the top of the second line, but the
situation is reversed for the bottom of the first line.
I must say I am not really convinced. But let us assume I am: this is not
really an issue: the scalers are there, it is only a matter of using them.
As a side note, if there are use cases where the SPU scaler looks better
than libswscale, it may be a good idea to port it to libswscale.
Well, I will try not to bikeshed more about that until I have practical code
to show.
