Good argument. But in my opinion the static, non-changing case happens
mostly with small and simple subtitles, in which case rendering is
relatively fast anyway.

Maybe trying to update rectangular regions instead of horizontal bands
would bring the same performance gain for vf_ass? I'm just guessing and
bikeshedding here, though.
