Probably the two windows are fighting about who gets shown.
I.e. the GUI window gets to draw its black background, and then
the video window on top of it gets to draw its content.
I never managed to get it work, but I believe it's supposed to be
possible to tell X to not automatically refresh the background
of the window, maybe that would help?
