probably - create that index.
windows players doesen't play avi files without index at all
( you can get around that using preview from windows commannder iirc )
aviplay plays those, but it recreates index first ( this can get very long
time when your .avi is on slow medium like cdrom or network )
and mplayer just plays the file with lightning speed. 
there is something in docs about mplayer developers thinking about other
ways of dealing with index problem though.
