Please tell us which video out driver you use and if you have libpng 
installed please try the following:
create a temporary directory, change into it and do:
mplayer -vo png -z 1 <add -pp x here is you use it> /path/to/movie.avi

Then mplayer will create a png file for each frame, use q to quit mplayer.
Then look at the files created, if they look ok it's an issue of the video 
out driver and not of the decoder.
