AFAIK mplayer cant software scaling itself (see below), 
and even if it could, you'll not like it because it's 
far too slow.
If you want to watch movies on the console buy a 
matrox and use mga_vid

you can scale an image with sdl, but i'm not sure wether
sdl has a working fbdev output.
