I used it on my laptop where i dont have Xv, but i can reproduce
it on my desktop with -noxv:

-vo sdl -noxv; # pressing f -> nice picture (ie overlay mode)
-vo sdl -noxv -fs # lots of pixels (ie software scaled)

Do you need mplayer outputs ?

And yes, -vm and -zoom don't change anything
