of course. why to include codec names in the doc directly?
it's written in docs several places _how_to_select_ codec.
it works everywhere with every codec.
if you are interested in available codec names, check the
codec list at the homepage/informations/codec status page.
(or codecs.conf)

do you want faq entries like this: ?

Q: I want to use ffmpeg12 codec for dvd playback, what to do?
A: mplayer -vc ffmpeg12 -dvd ...

i see no sense...
