It's quite a job to install it correctly from scratch.  I would put the 
system back to standard and get things to compile.  Install gcc2.95 in a 
different location and specify that to mplayer if you really want to build 
it with that.  Both compilers work, just that 2.95 works better for some 
*shrugs*
