this gcc-2.96* distributed with mandrake 8 is a special gcc made by
mandrake its not an 'official' gcc-2.96, if there is any official gcc-2.96
release, dont know. its also not the same as the gcc-2.96 shipped with
red-hat distros, specially this gcc seems to be problematic. 
if a source compiles without error or it works after then are different
things, i think. its also depends on the code, it seems that gcc-3.0 is
more stricter handling the code then gcc-2.95.3, but with some minor
changes some sloppy code could be compiled with gcc-3.0 too.
