I can confirm another gcc 2.96 related problem. All versions of 
gcc 2.96 that come with rh 7.1 and rh 7.2 (in default installations 
or updated from redhat.com) miscompile lame 3.89beta. You cannot 
create variable bitrate mp3's with it (in my experience). If 
compiled with gcc3, everything works fine :)
