Now the last thing to make me completely happe is mencoder being able to
encode those subtitles into the AVI. :)

BTW: Would it be feasible to have an option for mplayer like "-probe"
which just outputs some information about the file/dvd, like bitrate,
subtiles, audio-channels, etc. but does _not_ play the file? 

This would ease sorting out broken files, incomplete files, files with
wrong suffix, etc. using a small script, which calls mplayer -probe (or
maybe a stand-alone binary, "mprobe").
