xanim plays only very old avi file formats, line cvid and indeo.
it can't play divx at all...

mplayer plays divx too, but use directshow only for divx. so this
directshow error message shouldn't be shown for such old files...

maybe you has wrong codec package or codecs.conf installed?

please read DOCS/BUGREPORTS...
(and incude mplayer -v logs next time)
