[Mplayer-users] audio from DVDs quiet

hello. MPlayer is great.

one thing to report: audio volume from DVDs is rather quiet. seems consistent with any DVD i try.

very odd to me. audio volume of most other (maybe all?) .mpeg and .avi files is considerably higher. to watch a movie i have to turn my master volume to 100% and pcm volume to 80% and higher. at this level all other system sounds (ex mp3s from xmms and the "bring" in gaim) are very very loud. i have been getting around this problem by making sure nothing else will be playing sounds while i watch DVDs. however, it would be nice if DVDs were at a more normal volume level. also it is a tad annoying because when turned way up, my sound card emits a slight buzzing sound, where as with mp3 and such i don't have to turn it way up and don't hear the buzz.

i have ALSA sound setup. have tried with and w/o -ao alsa5 and also tried w/o ALSA and just plain OSS driver for my card: no change.

any thoughts? i've tried the CVS version. also i checked the source and read a little bit about ac3 audio. experimented with the dialnorm variable in libac3/parse.c with no luck. is there a global "audio gain" variable that could be a command line switch perhaps?

thanks!
