for the YV12-black image problem:

i think, you have SDL and/or nasm from mandrake 8.
nasm in new mandrake is compiled with gcc 2.96, which is
buggy, so the resulting nasm creates buggy code. SDL
compilation requires nasm, and if you compile SDL with
this buggy nasm, it will fail with YV12 and aalib.
It's a very strange and funny bug, discovered by havner, i think.

you should drop those from 8.0, and compile them from source,
with gcc 2.95.x!
