That's skipping. I mean real fast forward and reverse, like in a VCR or
a DVD player. The kind that has variable speeds and keeps going until
I tell it to stop. The kind that can also go slow enough that it allows
the user to keep track of what's going on, when skipping a boring part
or a commercial or an intro or whatever. I wouldn't mind slow play and 
frame by frame either or the ability to take still pictures from a movie.

Sort of like the difference between using a line editor and a full screen
editor... I hope you're not going to tell me you write code with ed :)

Come to think of it, jumping to a given time, like the -ss option while
playing might be nice too.
