I don't have much experience with autoconf, but I have used it a little.
It's much easier to understand if you read the info manual.
Unfortunately, the info browser is difficult to use unless you use
emacs. So get pinfo (pinfo.sf.net), which works like lynx for info, and
autoconf to your heart's content.
