I use -vo xv with same ATi-drivers (for XPert at Work, i.e. Rage Pro chipset)
and when testing subtitles did blink only once for a short time, directly 
after skipping. I have tested with current CVS-version and an "older" version 
just shortly before change of audio system. 
If you send me the sub-file, I'll see if it happens here, too.
