Hi back,
ok, after i sent that email i noticed DOCS/encoding.html says ...
"br=XXX - specify bitrate in kbit <0-1024> (this is for CBR only!)"
so my apologies for that, however i think it would be helpful if
eventually all the faq's, html, and man pages were consolidated.
Also is there a plan for autocropping of the borders as it should
definatly produce smaller file sizes ?

rtfm. br= is not enough, as lame by default use VBR mode.
so -lameopts cbr:br=128
