[MPlayer-users] MEncoder and file sizes

OK, I stipulate that I don't know a lot about what I'm doing, but RTFM'ing
isn't helping me here.

The bitrate of 1500 was only one of the three examples. In another, I used
1100. Yes, the source is 1100 (video) also. But, my understanding was that
this means there should be little change in quality. I don't really want to
have my bitrate much below 1100, do I?

This video was converted by some yahoo on the Net into a DiVX with the same
visual quality at 50MB. That's roughly a 5:1 compression ratio. To get that
just by dropping the bitrate I would expect the bitrate would need to be
around 220! That's really low! I tried it, and did indeed get a small file,
but VERY poor quality. Hell, I can do that just by resampling the MPEG
source at a lower bitrate, without using MEncoder, and in a fraction of the
time.

So, the question is, how did that guy get HIS file to 50MB? I thought this
was the whole point behind DiVX. Am I just an idiot? I can accept that, but
only if it's true. :-)

[Automatic answer: RTFM (read DOCS, FAQ), also read DOCS/bugreports.html &

why are you surprised? vcd bitrate is around 1120, and you choose a bigger
value, 1500
