Thanks everybody for all the help. I have successfully compiled mencoder
and even encoded a .mpg file to DivX4 using mencoder. The reduction in size
is about 10MB. However one thing I noted. If I play the newly created .avi
file I get :

The video plays but it is not true full screen. Here I used the xv driver.
However with vesa driver it works fine. I could not find any option in
mencoder to apply prescaling. Is it a feature not yet implemented in
mencoder ?

The original video gives this. It works fine. True full screen. (scaling)
