Hi,
Just got access to a pentium4 - 2GHz system with 1GB PC800 RAMBUS ram (fast!)
so immediately did some benchmarking on it.
Here are the results:
mencoder:
VIDEO: MPEG2 480x480 (aspect 2) 29.97 fps 3056.0 kbps (382.0 kbyte/s)
57.4s -> 0m53.540s
(encoding of 57.4s long svcd movie took 53.54 secs)
File: test/Coyote.Ugly.Sample-highbitrate-atmos.avi
VIDEO: [DIV3] 640x480 24bpp 25.00 fps 1867.1 kbps (227.9 kbyte/s)
DShow DLL : 9.204s 9.202s
VfW DLL : 9.639s 9.638s
DivX4-YV12 : 8.839s 8.857s
DivX4-YUY2 : 11.437s 11.407s
FFmpeg : 7.751s 7.751s
File: test/Star_Wars_Episode_1.avi
VIDEO: [DIV3] 720x576 24bpp 25.00 fps 1858.5 kbps (226.9 kbyte/s)
DShow DLL : 33.900s 33.882s
VfW DLL : 33.930s 33.967s
DivX4-YV12 : 33.107s 33.053s
DivX4-YUY2 : 44.825s 45.018s
FFmpeg : 28.252s 28.160s
Note 1: ffmpeg rulez!
Note 2: divx4 yuy2 is fuckin' sloooooooow!
Just for comparison, here are results running same tests on my celeron2 1066
(133mhz bus):
celeron2-1066:
mencoder:
VIDEO: MPEG2 480x480 (aspect 2) 29.97 fps 3056.0 kbps (382.0 kbyte/s)
57.4s -> 1m18.630s
File: /3d/divx/Coyote.Ugly.Sample-highbitrate-atmos.avi
VIDEO: [DIV3] 640x480 24bpp 25.00 fps 1867.1 kbps (227.9 kbyte/s)
couldn't open/init audio device -> NOSOUND
DShow DLL : 15.808s 15.704s
VfW DLL : 15.480s 15.449s
DivX4-YV12 : 12.271s 12.290s
DivX4-YUY2 : 13.340s 13.312s
FFmpeg : 12.770s 12.763s
File: /3b/Star_Wars_Episode_1.avi
couldn't open/init audio device -> NOSOUND
VIDEO: [DIV3] 720x576 24bpp 25.00 fps 1858.5 kbps (226.9 kbyte/s)
DShow DLL : 58.038s 58.014s
VfW DLL : 58.477s 58.475s
DivX4-YV12 : 46.044s 45.571s
DivX4-YUY2 : 50.364s 50.251s
FFmpeg : 46.787s 46.887s
divx4-yv12 won both tests this time.
note that p4 2hgz doesn't seem to be 2x (or more) faster than 1ghz celeron-2.
it's strange, as it has very fast ram (400mhz rambus compared to 133mhz sdram)
and also the cpu has double clockrate.
maybe the code should be optimized differently for p4?
